In 1967 Flerov identified element 105 at the Joint Research institute in Russia. In 1970, Ghiorso, Nurmia, Harris, K. Eskola and P. Eskola announced the identification of element 105 at Berkeley. They gave it the unofficial name of hahnium after the German scientist Otto Hahn, symbol Ha. Elements 104 through 109 have systematic names. All these elements were prepared by bombarding uranium nuclei or other atoms with atomic particles.
